Advanced Higher Modern Studies is ideal preparation for those learners looking to study a social sciences related course at university.

The Curriculum for Excellence (CFE) Advanced Higher Modern Studies course builds on the skills and knowledge of the Higher Modern Studies course.

The Advanced Higher Modern Studies course has two Units in which learners must pass assessments set by the class teacher/lecturer;

  • Contemporary Issues
  • Researching Contemporary Issues

The Advanced Higher Modern Studies course also has a Question Paper, graded A, B, C and D by SQA.

In Contemporary Issues, Modern Studies departments can choose between Political Issues or Social Issues; Crime and the law or Social Issues; Social Inequality.

External Assessment

The Advanced Higher Modern Studies course places a high emphasis and priority on skills.

These are skills for Advanced Higher Modern Studies and also skills for life long learning and work.

The Advanced Higher Modern Studies course is therefore assessed in two components.

 

Component 1 CFE Advanced Higher Modern Studies Project-Dissertation

The Advanced Higher Modern Studies project-dissertation is marked out of 50 marks.

In the Advanced Higher Modern Studies Project dissertation, the learner chooses an issue which can generate debate and draw on higher level skills of analysis and synthesis. 

SQA has an approved list of topics which can be viewed here.

These titles are not mandatory and an alternative title can be chosen, in discussion with the teacher/lecturer responsible.

The learner should then undertake primary research (where possible) and secondary research of a range of political/social literature.

The completed project-dissertation should be between 4500 - 5000 words long and contain the features of a university style body of work.

The completed project-dissertation must be completed and posted to SQA by the presenting school/college by a date set by SQA, normally around Easter time.

Component 2 CFE Higher Modern Studies Question Paper

The Advanced Higher Modern Studies Question Paper lasts 3 hours and is marked out of 90.

Within the Advanced Higher Modern Studies Question Paper both knowledge and skills are assessed.

'Essay' style questions are worth 30 marks and Research Methods questions are worth 15 marks.
