National 5 Modern Studies (SCQF Level 5)
The Curriculum for Excellence (CFE) National 5 Modern Studies course builds on the skills and knowledge of the National 5 Modern Studies course.
In Political Issues, Modern Studies departments can choose between Democracy in Scotland or Democracy in the UK.
In Social Issues, Modern Studies departments can choose between Social Inequalities or Crime and the Law.
In International Issues, Modern Studies departments can choose between the study of a G20 World Power or an International Issue which has a global impact.
The National 5 Modern Studies course places a high emphasis and priority on skills.
These are skills for National 5 Modern Studies and also skills for life long learning and work.
The National 5 Modern Studies course is is therefore assessed in two components.
Component 1 CFE National 5 Modern Studies Assignment
The National 5 Modern Studies Assignment is marked out of 20 marks and is worth 1/5 of the overall grade.
In the National 5 Modern Studies Assignment the learner chooses a Modern Studies issue in which there are alternative views.
The learner then researches the issue and 'writes up' during the 'production of evidence stage' a report on his/her findings within the school/college under supervised conditions.
The 'production of evidence' stage will last up to 60 minutes.
As well as knowledge of the issue, the learner should apply Modern Studies skills of synthesising information, analysing the reliability/usefulness/validity of sources.
Learners can use up to two single sided sheets of A4 pieces of paper known as 'Research Evidence' assist them in writing the report.
The report should be balanced yet decisive and based on evidence in recommending a decision on the political, social or international issue.
While the research phase can take place at any time of the academic year, the 'write up' is a school/college decision normally taken once the teacher is convinced that learners have completed their research and are ready.
The completed assignment must be completed and posted to SQA by the presenting school/college by a date set by SQA, normally around Easter time.
Component 2 CFE National 5 Modern Studies Question Paper
The National 5 Modern Studies Question Paper lasts 2 hours and 20 minutes, is marked out of 80 and is worth 4/5 of the overall grade.
The National 5 Modern Studies Question Paper is graded A, B, C and D by SQA.
This year the National 5 Modern Studies Question Paper will be sat on 1 May 2019.
Each of the three Sections of the National 5 Modern Studies course are assessed in the Question Paper.
Within the National 5 Modern Studies Question Paper both knowledge and skills are assessed.
Questions are worth either 4, 6, 8, or 10 marks.
